“The explorer” is how some students identify Megan O. McCall. Her passion for teaching secondary science for 19 years is about encouraging students to “do science.” From studying climate change with scientists in the Arctic Ocean to tagging humpback whales and icefish in Antarctica, she works to ignite the spark for science education. In 2019, Megan was part of the NOAA OER research team which captured the first ever video footage of a giant squid in U.S. waters. Her quest for knowledge in science education even led her on a Fulbright Distinguished Teacher experience to New Zealand in 2016. This past summer she studied climate change with scientists in Maine through a grant award from Fund For Teachers and served as a co-coordinator of teachers in Social Emotional Learning projects through the Ramsden Project. McCall completed her doctoral studies in 2017 in Instructional Design and Development at the University of South Alabama. Most notably in awards, she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST) award in 2009 and renewed her National Board teacher certification in 2016. She looks forward to being a Barton Explorer "reimagined" and helping guide students on their own paths to science discovery.
